Behind the Lens with AFRISOS

A Storytelling Expedition in Tanzania

If you’ve ever wanted to experience a place through its true, local narrative, we’re inviting you to come along for the ride. This isn’t just a trip; it’s a front-row seat to the power of intentional storytelling…and we want you to be part of the story!

Under the expert mentorship of the The African School of Storytelling (AFRISOS),you’ll be paired directly with a talented local African photographer or filmmaker. Together as peers, you’ll share techniques, challenge each other’s creative instincts, and build a beautiful, lasting international bond.

Through years of collaboration and deep respect, AFRISOS has earned a rare, sacred bond of trust with the Hadza—an Indigenous hunter-gatherer community that deliberately lives apart from mainstream urban society and capitalistic culture. This trust is our gateway. It allows us to step into remote spaces where outsiders simply cannot go. You will engage in a slow, respectful exchange with Hadza collaborators and traditional storytellers who have chosen to open up their lives, sharing their real, unscripted heritage and personal stories for you to capture through your lens.

Why Join This Experience?

  • Create side-by-side with brilliant African peers: Forget standard workshops; you will pair up with a local filmmaker or photographer to co-create, blending global perspectives with deep regional expertise.

  • Master real-world field production: Take your craft off the grid. Alongside AFRISOS mentors, you’ll learn the grit and beauty of documentary work, from managing solar power in the wild to polishing a compelling edit under a tight deadline.

  • Experience the ultimate creative circle: This isn't a take-and-leave trip. After days of crafting your story, you will experience the unforgettable honor of returning it, sharing your finished short films and prints in a live, outdoor community screening right there in the valley for the Hadza families who inspired them.

Itinerary

  • Welcome to Tanzania! Upon arriving in Arusha, you will be met by our team and transferred to the peaceful Outpost Lodge. To ensure you are fully refreshed, adjusted to the time zone, and ready for the intensive days ahead, today is completely yours to rest, shake off the jet lag, and enjoy the lodge’s relaxed atmosphere.

We will take the first couple days to adjust and soak in the vibrant rhythms of Arusha. Explore local markets, discover regional crafts, or capture street vignettes in the golden afternoon light. In the evening, gather for a relaxed welcome dinner with your fellow storytellers and AFRISOS mentors to set intentions for the creative expedition ahead.

  • Our official program begins with an intensive kick-off briefing and an equipment check. Meet your AFRISOS storytelling mentors and dive into a series of interactive icebreakers, storytelling masterclasses, and portfolio presentations. We will lay the technical and narrative groundwork required to approach remote documentary production with respect, artistry, and depth.

  • We take an early departure from Arusha, traversing scenic routes through the Great Rift Valley toward the Lake Eyasi basin. Arriving in Mgidinko, we register alongside our local creative partners and meet the Hadza collaborators who will anchor and guide our stories. After a briefing on camp protocols, we jump right in with a 5-shot filmmaking and editing workshop led by our mentors. As night falls, we gather around a crackling fire for a symbolic introduction session, connecting international and local creators under the stars.

  • Wake up to the aroma of early morning coffee and tea as the wild surroundings stir to life. Our first official shooting block kicks off at sunrise, pairing international creators, local filmmakers, and Hadza collaborators. Today is about tracking the beginning of your visual arc, building trust, and framing stunning environmental portraits in the morning and afternoon light. Midday features a dedicated review and planning block alongside Swahili-translating mentors to help shape the narrative arc of your interview structures.

  • Following a sunrise shoot, we pack our expedition camp and embark on an intentional 1-hour walk through the valley to our second base: Hukumako. Walking alongside our hosts, you'll experience a mosaic of open valley grasslands and ancient rocky ridges punctuated by massive, towering baobabs. After settling into the new camp, the afternoon is dedicated to building out the second act of your documentary narratives, capturing the transition of environment and mood.

  • Three full days of immersive, unhurried storytelling freedom. Creators will utilize golden hours for action sequences and intimate environmental portraiture. Midday slots are reserved for organizing interview questionnaires, backing up raw materials, and reviewing dailies with AFRISOS mentors. You will document real, un-staged heritage, foraging traditions, and daily community life, weaving a comprehensive tapestry of modern indigenous identity.

  • Our final day in the field focuses heavily on editing, post-production workflows, and polishing the final cuts. The climax of the entire program takes place in the evening: a local exhibition and outdoor screening in Domanga where the finished short films and photographs are proudly showcased to the local Hadza community in a celebratory, emotional cultural exchange.

  • After a final breakfast in camp, we pack up our base and journey back to Arusha. Creators will catch their evening international flights home, or stay to transition into one of our extension tracks!

Meet your Mentors: The African School of Storytelling

AFRISOS (The African School of Storytelling) was founded by award-winning nature and culture documentary filmmaker Jigar Ganatra. Jigar’s own creative path is fueled by a belief that the answers to our planet's ecological and cultural crises lie in the hands of those who live closest to nature. Driven to bridge the gap between formal education and real-world field experience, his storytelling pursuits have taken him from the East African Savannah to the deep Amazon rainforest and the soaring peaks of the Himalayas.

To empower local creators and change how Africa is seen by the world, Jigar co-founded AFRISOS in 2020. Today, this impactful non-governmental organization is dedicated to preserving Africa's rich natural and cultural heritage. They don't just capture stories from the outside looking in; AFRISOS actively uplifts Indigenous communities by providing equipment, training, and a global platform to share their own perspectives. Bringing world-class technical expertise, deep cross-cultural sensitivity, and a heart-led approach, Jigar and the AFRISOS team offer an incredible ecosystem to help you elevate your craft and find your purpose as a storyteller.
